NIE in Barcelona: How to Get It in 2026 (Step by Step)

March 202610 min read

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the single most important document you need when moving to Spain. Without it, you cannot sign a rental contract, open a bank account, get a phone plan, or start working legally. Getting one in Barcelona takes some patience, but the process itself is straightforward.

What exactly is the NIE?

The NIE is a tax identification number assigned to foreigners in Spain. It is not a visa or a residency permit. Think of it as your fiscal identity. Every foreigner who does anything official in Spain needs one, whether you are renting an apartment, buying property, or freelancing.

EU vs non EU citizens

EU/EEA citizens: You can apply for the NIE directly at the Oficina de Extranjería in Barcelona. The process is simpler and faster. You can also apply at a Spanish consulate before arriving.

Non EU citizens: You typically get the NIE as part of your visa or residence permit process. If you are on a student visa, digital nomad visa, or work permit, the NIE comes with it. If you need a standalone NIE (for buying property, for example), you can apply at the Oficina de Extranjería or at a Spanish consulate in your home country.

Step 1: Book your cita previa

Everything in Spanish bureaucracy starts with a cita previa (appointment). You book it online at sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es. Select the province (Barcelona), the procedure (Asignación de NIE), and pick a date.

Here is the challenge: appointments in Barcelona are notoriously hard to get. They are released in batches and get booked within minutes. Tips:

Step 2: Prepare your documents

Bring the following to your appointment:

  1. EX15 form (download from the extranjería website, fill it out in advance)
  2. Passport (original + photocopy of the main page)
  3. Justification for why you need the NIE. This can be a work contract, rental pre agreement, university enrollment letter, or a simple written statement explaining your economic or professional reasons for needing it
  4. Proof of address in Spain (empadronamiento, hotel booking, or a letter from your host)
  5. Tasa 790 code 012: the fee payment form. You pay this at a bank before your appointment. The fee is approximately 12 euros (it changes slightly each year). Download the form from the Agencia Tributaria website

Pro tip

Print everything. Spanish government offices do not have printers available. Bring two copies of each document. And bring a pen.

Step 3: Go to your appointment

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. The main office for Barcelona is the Oficina de Extranjería at Carrer Murcia 42 (near Marina metro station). Some appointments might be at the Comisaría de Policía on Carrer Mallorca.

The process itself takes about 30 minutes. They check your documents, take your fingerprints (for residency certificates), and either give you the NIE on the spot or tell you to come back in a few days.

Step 4: Receive your NIE

For EU citizens, you usually get a green A4 paper (the Certificado de Registro) with your NIE number on the same day or within a week. For non EU citizens, processing takes longer, typically 2 to 4 weeks.

How long does the whole process take?

StepDuration
Getting an appointment1 to 3 weeks (patience required)
Preparing documents1 day
The appointment itself30 minutes to 1 hour
Receiving the NIESame day to 4 weeks

Common mistakes to avoid

Forgetting to pay the tasa. You must pay the fee BEFORE your appointment at a bank. You cannot pay at the office. If you forget, you will need to reschedule.

Not having a justification. "I just need it" is not enough. Bring a concrete reason: a rental pre agreement, a job offer letter, proof of enrollment.

Wrong form. Make sure you are filling out EX15 for a standard NIE, not EX18 (which is for EU registration).

Can I start apartment hunting without a NIE?
